The Importance of Collaboration

Collaboration is just as important as the art.

You can't do it alone. The saying, "If you want something done, then you have to do it yourself," is not true! Collaboration, in my own terms, is when we allow others to be a part of the process. Being a jack-of-all-trades can have it's benefits, but why not have people who have much more experience in something be a part of the process? For example, I am a terrible planner. But my wife is an excellent organizer. She knows how to keep event dates and the days leading up to it organized, planned, and prepared. If it wasn't for her, I'd be jumbling over the logistics of events. I'd be stumbling over how and when to contact people. Look at our services here:

Whether you're a DJ, rapper, musician, or producer, others are important. Without others, you can only get so far. Be open to trusting others to get something done. If you are in a lead role, allow yourself to delegate to team members what you could do yourself to free up time for yourself in your own schedule. If you are a person getting something delegated to, be a team player; pursue that task to the best of your ability.

AI tools and the future of DJ'ing

          AI technology is progressing

Artificial intelligence technology & tools are progressing faster than I can catch up. I just started to use ChatGPT as an upgrade up from the standard Google. I can recall when I jokingly made a statement to a friend where I had said, "So using Google is like a 'Boomer' thing to do?" We were talking about how information was so readily available on TikTok, but other tools and websites are now popping up that have a step up from quick content platforms.

A friend had shown me a song that he created. It was a track with Future Bass-type elements and EDM feels. And it was good. I hadn't known my friend was a producer, but he had told our group chat he is pursuing it as a hobby. His track also featured a singer on it. I didn't recognize the singer's voice, but had wanted to ask how he got the vocals to sound so good. The singer was extremely talented, and included in the mix, he did a stellar job. He had then mentioned that it was an AI singer. I, for one at this point, didn't even know that kind of technology was readily available to the public. I never got the name of the AI tool he had used, but I figure this topic deserves to be discussed for the future of producers and DJ's.

The culture of DJ'ing is one that has static standards to an extent. For example, a feature like the SYNC button on a controller has never been so vehemently despised that if one uses it, they're practically a non-DJ.

I bought my first DJ controller in 2016. It was a Pioneer DDJ-200. I had bought it with the intention of learning how to DJ without the use of learning it without tutorials or another person's help. I wanted to learn in a vacuum. A social experiment of some sorts on the basis of originality. Eventually I did except help from others and from YouTube. But you had guessed it: The SYNC button was one of the first things I learned on it. And surprisingly, I landed my first gig and a few house parties by DJ'ing with the SYNC button. At this point, I had thought that all DJ's use the SYNC button. It was my first reality check by a local DJ, as he lectured me in my parents' garage. "Never use the SYNC button," he said. "Really? But why?" I asked. "Real DJ's never use the SYNC button. You have to get used to DJ'ing with the volume sliders. And leave the crossfader in the middle." I was dumbfounded.

There are technically multiple ways of doing the same things with a DJ controller. And with AI tools, there are different ways to have vocals on a studio track. AI technology will continue to progress. What the human touch will look like in the process of it all will shift as well over the course of time. For the future of DJ'ing, I say that it's at least wise to learn about these tools, even though I myself will not implement them for some extended period of time. I, now, am a traditionalist, ironically. The advancement of AI technology will continue to progress despite my personal hesitations; best to start learning.

How to be a successful DJ in 2024

How to be a successful DJ means to redefine your idea of what success is as a DJ. Starting small and working your way up is an immense means of helping yourself.

Be willing to start off small

DJ's aren't just needed in nightclubs. DJ's are needed for all sorts of events: birthday parties, quinceñera's, debut's, baby showers, etc. The list goes on and on. But many up and coming DJ's are stuck in the one-track mind of wanting to DJ just nightclubs. Be open to doing smaller gigs, build your name up, and work your way up to doing nightclubs if that is what you are aiming to do.

Realize that being a successful DJ means that it's not all about the mixing

DJ'ing isn't just about mixing music. DJ'ing also involves building rapport with clients and building relationships with people.

Have an EPK and other promotion materials

An EPK is an electronic press kit. Have this ready and other promotion materials like a highlight reel on YouTube and links to your Instagram and Tiktok.

          Know your audience

Observe the crowd, and see what music they are vibing with.

          Take care of your client

Make sure that your clients feel that they are being catered to. Be prepared for every event. If the client requested Taylor Swift and other pop hits, but you feel like you want to play hip-hop because that's what you think the crowd will like, you're wrong. Unless you communicated with the client before your set, make sure to always cater to your clients wants/requests.

In conclusion, these tips will help you up your clientele list, make sure you have happy clients, and will ensure for your success as a DJ in 2024.

Being a successful DJ is the dream of many aspiring artists and music producers out there in the world today. I know that when I started making music, achieving the dream of sustaining off of the income of just music was my dream. I'm getting closer to that dream today, and it is becoming more of a reality instead of a fantasy.
